Shared Parental Leave to be extended to Grandparents
The new Shared Parental Leave arrangements introduced in April have not yet bedded in, but already the government has announced that this will be extended further so that the time can be shared with grandparents as well from 2018.

It may be seen to be useful to provide additional support to new parents, but the administrative arrangements are likely to add further burdens on employers.

Of course it remains to be seen how many people take this up, but it will only apply to grandparents who are still in employment. And whilst we do not yet know the details, it is likely that similar eligibility criteria will be applied to those currently in place for fathers/spouses looking after the new baby/ adopted child. It will only apply during the first year of a child's life or adoption and the pay is likely to be at the Statutory Parental Pay rate (or nil pay if that has been exhausted.)

In my experience, grandparents are more likely to want to use flexible working to provide unpaid childcare when their grandchild is a bit older, than to choose this option, so it will be interesting to see the numbers of people opting for this scheme.

More details will be published on this change when they are announced.
