Extension of unpaid parental leave
As well as the introduction of Shared Parental Leave, the (quite separate) parental leave rules for leave are due to be amended on 5 April 2015 to extend employees’ rights so that the age of a child, up to which unpaid parental leave may be taken, will be increased. Currently, unpaid parental leave can generally be taken up until the child's fifth birthday, but this will be increased so that the leave can be taken up to the child's eighteenth birthday. Companies may need to update their parental leave policies accordingly.
