Extending Flexibility – coming soon
In April The Government is extending the right to request flexible working to all employees with 26 weeks’ service – not just parents of children aged 16 or under (or under 18 for disabled children) as it is currently.

They will also remove the current statutory procedure for considering requests. Instead employers will have a duty to consider all requests in a reasonable manner. However, employers will still have the flexibility to refuse requests on business grounds.

This change is coming into force on 6th April 2014 and Acas is producing a new Code of Practice and non-statutory guidance for employers.

Note - since this article was written the date of introduction has been put on hold. See Stop Press article above. The new date of implementation has now been announced and will be 30th June 2014.
