Paying your employees: Are you ready for the introduction of RTI?
Real Time Information (RTI ) is a new way of reporting PAYE information that will be introduced by HMRC early this year. Small and medium sized businesses will have to start reporting using RTI from April 2013 onwards, and will need to do so using either up to date payroll software or an RTI ready payroll bureau.

So how will RTI affect SME owners who run their own payroll? RTI will make running a payroll a lot more complicated. Instead of preparing payslips for every pay day and submitting a P35 at the end of the year, employers will have to report to HMRC on or before every pay day using their payroll software. The software will need to be upgraded so that it is RTI compliant, and employers may have to get their heads around a whole new payroll system. It’s also worth bearing in mind that not all payroll software is registered with HMRC, so it can be difficult to tell which software really fits the needs of the business.

If you use your accountants or a payroll bureau you should ensure that you have checked with them that they are ready for the introduction of RTI and have all the information they need on your employees.
