Consultation over changes to tribunals
The Government is currently consulting on proposals on the way that employment disputes are resolved . Some of the proposals include:

* Increasing the qualifying period for presenting a claim of unfair dismissal from one to two years, as was the case before 1999.
* Requiring all claims to be subject to pre-claim conciliation with Acas before being allowed to progress to tribunal.
* Introducing a power for employment tribunals to impose financial penalties on employers found to have breached an individual’s rights. These fines, payable to the Exchequer, could amount to as much as half of the award made to the claimant, subject to a proposed maximum of £5,000.

The consultation period closes on the 20th April 2011 but the Government has also announced that the Ministry of Justice has also proposed to undertake its own separate consultation on the possibility of introducing fees for bringing a tribunal complaint.
