Improving productivity & motivation
In the midst of all the activity related to the downturn, it is easy for employees to become very worried about their particular situation and the future of the business. They will start to watch very carefully for signs that something is wrong. So it is crucial that they are involved as much as possible. E.g.
• Engage them in problem solving and coming up with ideas for the future of the business - both cost savings and possible opportunities.
• Address personal concerns and manage expectations. Don’t wait for them to ask you about redundancies. When they have understood the situation they are more likely to be willing to help.
• Talk to staff about implementing flexible working arrangements to suit the needs of the business.
• Keep communicating even if you have nothing new to say! If you stop, they are likely to assume that it is bad news and key employees may leave.
The autumn 2008 newsletter has more information on redundancy, restructuring and other options. For a copy or further advice contact Helen Astill on 01684 594773.
