The Appraisal Discussion – Hints & Tips for Managers
The manager should:

* Give the employee the completed written assessment a few days before the discussion;

* Make sure that the discussion can be held without interruption in private and that sufficient time is set aside for it – book a meeting room;

* Check that actions from the last performance review discussion have been followed up;

* Remind himself/ herself of any objectives agreed with the employee and the factors taken into account in arriving at the assessments of performance;

* Identify areas of the job where the employee’s performance has been particularly effective or where there is need for improvement;

* Identify broad objectives for the coming year for discussion and make sure that these fit in with the Company’s objectives;

* Consider potential role changes to help the employee meet his/ her potential.

* Be prepared to ask ‘open’ questions and listen to the employee’s answers.
