However, the survey revealed that fewer than half of employers measure the level of absence and its cost. Helen Astill of Cherington HR views this as a concern, “Those businesses that do not review their absence figures will find it very difficult to improve attendance rates and reduce wasted costs as they won’t know which areas to tackle as a priority.”

Employers should monitor the level of absence in terms of frequency and length of episodes to assess whether there are common factors that can be addressed.

For example, are there more absences in a particular team? Do they always occur on the same days of the week/ month? Are there lots of short absences or are some of them longer-term? What are the causes of absence being listed? How much is it costing in terms of SSP and company sick pay, NI, overtime and agency costs to cover the absence? What is the impact on management time, lost production, reduced levels of customer service and increased workload for remaining employees?
