New Right to Bereavement Leave for Parents
A new workplace right to leave for bereaved parents received the Royal Assent on 13th September.

The new Parental Bereavement Leave and Pay Act will give all employed parents a right to 2 weeks’ leave if they lose a child under the age of 18 or suffer a stillbirth from 24 weeks of pregnancy. Employed parents will also be able to claim pay for this period, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.

The Act is expected to come into force in 2020 and the rights to the leave will apply from an employee’s first day of employment.

I am aware that most of my client businesses are very sympathetic to such situations, and treat their staff with dignity and compassion, but this new Act will provide a structure to assist them and their employees to have that difficult conversation about the aftermath of a child’s death; how that impacts on the employee and how the employer can help the employee back to work afterwards.
