New guides available from the Home Office and HMRC
The government has recently published new guides and updated advice on two important areas of relating to employing staff: those of undertaking the right to work checks and dealing with statutory sick pay.

The Home Office has updated its guide on undertaking right to work checks. The key updates relate to:

• the steps you should take if a prospective employee presents information indicating they are a non-EEA national who has been a long-term lawful resident of the UK since before 1988, and who does not possess acceptable right to work documentation;

• further clarification on appropriate steps for employers in relation to existing employees;

• clarification of the grace period in cases of TUPE transfers; and

• ending restrictions on the employment of Croatian nationals with effect from 1 July 2018.

At the same time, HMRC has published an interactive online guide on sick pay to help new employers and those wanting to refresh their knowledge, the guide covers:

• Periods of Incapacity for Work (PIW);

• waiting days;

• qualifying conditions;

• linking periods;

• how much to pay and for how long;

• managing attendance;

• occupational sick pay.
