An Inspector Calls!

HMRC says that it believes the vast majority of companies will have used the furlough system correctly, but there are some stories of employers making employees work during a fraudulent claim for the furlough grant.

It is now starting to investigate claims and those employers who have dismissed employees because they believe that they have informed the authorities can not only expect fines and prosecution, but unfair dismissal claims in the Employment Tribunal.

Although it is called a "hotline" the reporting system is online rather than by telephone and reports can be made anonymously at https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/report-fraud-to-hmrc

It is a complicated system, so if you think you have made a mistake with your claim, you are advised to put it right before an inspector calls!
