Case Study: The Italian Job

The Client
A small UK subsidiary of an Italian group that manufactures packaging systems for the bottled drinks sector, urgently needing to put in place terms and conditions for a secondee.

The Challenge
The UK subsidiary had been established for about 10 years with a sales and technical office. However, the Italian parent company wanted to place one of its engineers on a temporary secondment to the UK Company. It asked for details of the terms and conditions that would apply to be sent to them as a priority, but the UK company had never got round to putting such paperwork in place for its other employees before, so the MD turned to their accountants for urgent assistance. The accountant could advise on the tax issues, but referred him to Cherington HR to ask for help in putting all the relevant documentation together quickly.

The Solution
Helen Astill of Cherington HR met the MD to establish how the employees in the UK Company were managed and she then drafted a bespoke staff handbook; a written statement of particulars; and template documents to ensure that their standard terms and conditions were documented properly. She then worked with the MD to advise on specific issues relating to the secondment such as the provision of accommodation and a car for the engineer and his family whilst they were staying in the UK.

The Results
The resulting standard documents and secondment arrangement met the tight timescale involved to the satisfaction of the Italian parent company. During the following few months Helen was on hand to answer specific queries about the secondment from the parent Company. The accountants were happy that their client got what he needed and have subsequently referred other clients to Cherington HR when they have needed HR assistance.
