Case Study: Bringing Home the Bacon
The Client
A sole trader who owns an award-winning high-street butcher’s shop. He has a few employees who have worked for him for many years, but how he is thinking of retiring and selling the shop.

The Challenge
The owner of the business had traded from his shop for many years but did not have any employment documentation for his staff; no contracts of employment or the required policies on discipline or grievance. His staff knew that he was thinking of retiring and selling the business but were worried about their future and how they would be treated by a new owner. The business owner wasn’t sure what to do, but one of his friends was a client of Cherington HR and told him to get in touch with Helen Astill.

The Solution
Helen discussed the situation with the business owner and understood that he was concerned that everything should be put in place to protect the employees when the business is sold. He wanted their terms of employment to be set down on paper so there would be no dispute about what they were entitled to. Helen collated all the information provided by the owner about the terms that had been generated through custom and practice over the years and drafted up template documents for the owner to put in place for his employees as well as being available to show a purchaser during a due diligence exercise.

The Results
The butcher was pleased with the quick turnaround of documents and his employees were happier that they now had something in black and white to protect their continuity of service and employment terms.
