The client runs a beauty salon in Worcester and whist she had experience of individual beauticians renting space in the salon to provide treatments, she had never directly employed anyone before. She needed to take on her first employee because the business was growing, but she was very nervous about the prospect.
The owner of the salon had talked to her accountant who had decided that he didn’t want to take on more payroll responsibilities and did not know enough about employment matters himself. So she asked for help because she didn’t know where to start; what her responsibilities were; or what documentation she needed. She also knew that she had to find another accountant.
Helen visited the client to find out more about the requirements. She advised her on the legal aspects that needed to be put in place (employer liability insurance; notification to HMRC; pensions etc.) and went through the recruitment process with her. Helen drew up a pack of employment documents for her including an employment contract; a handbook with all the appropriate policies and procedures; job offer letter; reference request letter etc. She was also on hand to answer any queries as the client engaged the employee.
The whole process went smoothly, and the client felt less stressed about the process than she had previously. Helen also provided a copy of her “Dos and Don’ts” document that gives hints and tips on how to manage staff as a reference guide to keep handy. She provided the client with contact details of a couple of accountants that she thought would match the client’s needs. The client has now found the perfect accountant to undertake the payroll aspects and discovered that being an employer is not as bad as she first feared!
